What Is CBG?

What Is CBG?

CBD, or cannabidiol, has become increasingly popular in recent years, and CBD products have been taking over the market. While most consumers are aware of cannabinoids like THC and CBD, there are other lesser-known cannabinoids that can also offer many benefits.

One cannabinoid that has been steadily gaining attention over the years is CBG, or cannabigerol. Here is some information on CBG, how it’s made, and what effects or benefits it could potentially have:

What Is CBG?

CBG, or cannabigerol, is a cannabinoid that is most commonly found in cannabis strains that are low in THC and contain high amounts of CBD, such as hemp. CBG is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that interacts with the endocannabinoid system present in the human body and in animals, which can have certain physiological effects. While studies regarding CBG are still in the early stages, the results found in current CBG tests have been extremely promising.

How Is CBG Made?

CBG is present in most cannabis strains in low levels. However, the cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) produced in cannabis plants is generally converted to different ratios of THC and CBD, with only a small portion of it converting to CBG. In order to acquire higher yields of CBG, many hemp growers have been cross-breeding different cannabis strains, as well as extracting CBG from budding cannabis plants, which tend to have higher levels of CBG.

What Are The Potential Effects & Benefits of CBG?

While it should be stated that CBG studies are still ongoing and aren’t conclusive thus far, certain studies have shown that CBG can have potentially therapeutic effects and benefits for the human body. Some of the benefits that have been observed in current studies regarding CBG include (but are not limited to):

  • Pain relief

  • Anti-anxiety/anti-depressant effects

  • Potential symptom relief for certain conditions

  • Natural muscle relaxant

  • Anti-bacterial/anti-microbial/anti-fungal properties

  • Neuro-protective effects

  • Bone-strengthening capabilities

As research into the effects of CBG on the human body continues, it’s possible that there will be many more promising discoveries with regards to CBG use for health and wellness.
